Power and Performance

Every Tacoma has a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder in two forms, matched to either an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The base 228 horsepower turbo makes its way into the SR entry model. Other trims, such as the SR5 and TRD Sport, get the more powerful i-Force four-cylinder, making 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque.

There are three muscular options for powertrain in the Toyota Tundra. All of them are based on a turbocharged 3.4-liter V6. In the base model, the V6 produces 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. Move up to higher trims; that output jumps to 389 horsepower and 489 pound-feet. The V6 gets even more burly with 473 horsepower, paired with electric motors. All trims send power through a 10-speed automatic transmission, ensuring the Tundra sits in its ideal powerband through all driving conditions.

Acceleration

In the top-spec Tacoma, the truck gets to 60 miles per hour in just seven seconds from a stop. Great for the highways around Amherst and Williamsville or the off-road trails.

Despite weighing more, the Tundra still shaves nearly a second off the 60-mile-per-hour run of its younger brother, getting there in just over six seconds.

Towing and Payload

Both trucks are ready to haul all your gear. Of course, as a full-sized truck, the Tundra rocks a higher towing capacity at 12,000 pounds. Max payload is also very rugged at 1,940 pounds.

For the Tacoma, towing is up 6,500 pounds when equipped properly with 1,705 pounds of payload capacity. That means this truck is plenty capable despite its smaller size.

Off-Road Ability

Both Trucks have body-on-frame construction, which means they can flex more in off-road situations and maintain more traction with the trail. With more traction comes fewer situations where you're stuck and more fun for you and your family out in the woods.

Fuel Economy

For the Tacoma, the two-wheel drive variant's fuel economy is in the mid-20s. Change over to the four-wheel drive model, and you're staring down 23 mpg on the highway. It's not bad, considering how many activities this truck can do.

The non-hybrid Tundra returns 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Those numbers drop by one each if you opt for a four-wheel drive. It is surprisingly close to the smaller Tacoma, with impressive power and towing numbers.

Interior and Comfort

Both trucks look out for you with comfortable and functional interiors. With optional leather seats and center consoles with extra storage, what you need will be close to you whenever you need it. Both also feature seven-inch infotainment screens with optional 12.3-inch digital instrument clusters. That way, you're in control and informed in all weather conditions.
